The research opportunities presented by large ship artificial reefs are limited only by the imagination. The research opportunities presented by a REEFMAKERS™ project begin well before a ship is placed on the sea bottom. The research done on a REEFMAKERS™ project is guided by the locale of the project and the interests of the scientific community. REEFMAKERS™ projects have been the subject of ground breaking research sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC). REEFMAKERS™ is currently supporting projects that are measuring biomass on large ship reefs as well as surrounding habitats and the interrelationships between these two types of habitats. REEFMAKERS™ is currently working
with Stevens Institute to deploy state-of–the art measuring devices to track the cause and effect relationship between weather events and underwater structure and topography.
